BootStrapToday now supports SnapEngage

BootStrapToday now provides customers with a superior support integration with the SnapEngage chat client. With this release, a SnapEngage user who has a BootStrapToday account can set up a SnapEngage account to post chat queries and transcripts (online or offline) directly to a BootStrapToday account.

A user has to take the following steps to set up integration between a SnapEngage and a BootStrapToday account.

A user (say newbstuser with email id user@host.com ) creates a BootStrapToday account (say newbstaccount). Now newbstuser can log-in to newbstaccount.bootstraptoday.com, and create a project (say newbstproject). In the Project Settings tab of newbstproject, newbstuser will be provided with a SnapEngage tab which has a url. If a key for SnapEngage has not been created yet, the url will be empty, and, the tab will display a help message – “Request the account admin to create a SnapEngage Key”.

If newbstuser has account admin permissions (in case newbstuser creates an account – newbstuser is account admin), creation of key is simply accomplished by going to Account Settings and opening the SnapEngage tab.

Now newbstuser can go to Project Settings (for the project newbstproject) and access the url (say newbstprojecturl). In case of another user (say newbstprojectuser) who does not have account admin permissions, a request has to be made to account admin (newbstuser) to create a key as highlited above. Then newbstprojectuser can access newbstprojecturl in a similar fashion.

Finally, the user creates an account with SnapEngage (say newsnapengageaccount). The user can log-in to newsnapengageaccount, choose openApi as the destination option, and, provide the newbstprojecturl as the post event url. This simple set up now ensures that any query via the SnapEngage client for newsnapengageaccount will be posted as a ticket under the project newbstproject on newbstaccount.bootstraptoday.com. The ticket will be created under a component SnapEngage and will have the requisite fields filled out as per the data in SnapEngage chat transcripts.

We believe that with this new feature, we can now offer our customers 24/7 support facilities. We encourage our customers to try out our SnapEngage integration, and, provide feedback on how we can further improve BootStrapToday.

Idea Vs Execution

According to statistics hardly 1% of the ideas succeed. I would agree good ideas are important but the factor which play bigger role in the success of the business is execution. According to O’Really blog, brilliant ideas are worth only 20% of the whole business, rest is how its executed.

And, for anyone who’s ever built up a success, you quickly learn that execution is everything. The initial ideas are usually completely meaningless.

Do additional features in software reduce its durability?

Software designing has become very competitive because of the emergence of many new languages. Developers spend their major time finding the most suitable compilers which can reduce the complexities involved in developing software. Market is flooded with millions of software companies. These companies target the clients by creating a need for software in almost every routine. From switching the television using remote control to launching a satellite, the major dependency is software. These softwares are the whole and sole responsibility for the success of corresponding mechanism.

The companies around the globe hire the most efficient and highly skilled developers, as the softwares developed by them makes an impression over the customer. Softwares can be developed in low level as well as in high level languages. Some softwares are designed according to the needs of the customers while some are generic. The latter ones usually are designed for mass population. These softwares are for general use. They comprise of many features and functionalities. The aim of the company behind this strategy is cost saving. They feel it better to design single, multipurpose software in spite of designing several small, single purpose softwares. The customers who tend to use these kinds of softwares usually find it much complex and time consuming. There is one other category of people who like a single software which can meet all their expectations.

It becomes very difficult when there is a bug or an issue in the software. When the multipurpose software halts, the overall work of the company stops, but the one using variety of softwares for different activities do not worry on a single software failure. He remains quite relaxed as the other work at his company continues to work smoothly. Even if the idea of having a single software to perform multiple activities sounds good but falls short during implementation. It should be noted that adding features should be in such a way that a majority of the features should be utilized at the same time, else the software starts losing its durability and becomes malicious in a long run.

Lesser known 3rd Party Libraries For Every Project

Every project manager was a coder in his past life, and most of them carry their fortune in their current role as well. But still they become a bad guy to developers while creating a project delivery timelines. In some point of time we all must have met some projects which were planned very aggressively in terms of delivery. For small and early stage startups if getting a project is a challenge then delivering it on time is one step ahead. While talking to a team of iPhone application developers they confessed that the application development and delivery on time would have given them a real tough time  if it was to be done without using the third party library (Three 20 – the most common 3rd party Library for iPhone SDK). You blame it on customer’s weirdest requirement or the inability of native programing but the fact is that we have accepted that there is no feasible alternative to a third party library.  And the biggest question is what’s the harm? In the world of 3rd party libraries we get to hear about new kids on the block everyday. The Java 3rd party library ecosystem is a wild place. While everyone has heard of the big players such as Spring and Hibernate, too often the more humble, but equally important, libraries get left out in the cold

Some least heard but important such libraries which we have used in past are:

Unit Testing: DBUnit, Mockito, Hamcrest Matchers

Apache Common: Commons Configurations, Commons DbUtils, Commons IO, Commons Lang

Other: SLF4J, Google Collections, c3p0, Joda Time

Lets contribute by sharing your favorite but lesser known 3rd party libraries that no project should be without.

Paypal payments and RBI rules making it difficult for SME’s.

Paypal as a payment gateway has been a lifeline for many small and medium enterprises/Freelancers over the years in India. Most of the payments from clients to vendors were routed through paypal, which was like a boon for Indian Industry and Freelancers.

Last couple of years RBI (Reserve Bank of India) has started poking its nose into Paypal based transactions, which has created a huge confusion and uncertainty among Indian SMEs.

Last year there was some directive from RBI which created lots of confusion in SMEs mind. As the directive was not clear, some interpreted it as they will be required to get an IEC (Import Export Code) to receive money to their bank accounts from Paypal. Transaction from paypal were stopped for sometime last year as Paypal Indian officials were also not clear about the new directive. Many companies started applying for IEC. Later there was an announcement from Paypal that IEC was not mandatory, companies would require to define a “Purpose Code” to do the same. And the service was resumed in India, with “Purpose Code” mandatory while transferring money to their bank account from paypal. It was breather for Indian SMEs.

Now again this year RBI has come up with new directive. According to new directive, beginning March 1, 2011, any balance in and all future payments into your PayPal account may not be used to buy goods or services and must be transferred to your bank account in India within seven days from the receipt of confirmation from the buyer in respect of the goods or services. Also Export-related payments for goods and services into your PayPal account may not exceed USD 500 per transaction. For any transaction more than $500, you can not use paypal service, you need to find some other alternatives. Also you can not use paypal for domestic transactions. This has again become a big dampener for Indian SMEs. Now companies are not really sure about the paypal fate in India. They are not even sure what will be the next step of RBI. So companies have started looking for alternatives.

What do you think are the other options for SME’s???
